Winter Storm Watch | |

Statement as of 4:08 AM EST on December 18, 2009 ... Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from this evening through late Saturday night... A mix of rain and snow is expected to develop over much of interior eastern Virginia later this afternoon... as a low pressure system strengthens along the southeast United States coast. A mix of rain and snow is expected to continue Friday night and early Saturday morning... with a changeover to snow... mixed with sleet at times expected later Saturday morning and afternoon. Significant accumulations of snow are possible... as much as up to 5 inches or more... mainly from later Saturday morning through Saturday evening. As the storm system is still in the initial stages of developing... the exact track remains a bit uncertain. If the low moves farther to the west... the winter storm impacts would be diminished significantly across eastern and southeast Virginia. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for significant snow... sleet... or ice accumulations that may impact travel. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts. |

Coastal Flood Watch | |

Statement as of 4:03 AM EST on December 18, 2009 ... Coastal Flood Watch in effect from Saturday morning through Saturday afternoon... The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a coastal Flood Watch... which is in effect from Saturday morning through Saturday afternoon. Strengthening low pressure will move northeast along coastal Carolinas Friday night through early Saturday... then accelerate from the Virginia coast late Saturday into Sunday. This storm system has the potential to produce minor to moderate coastal flooding along the eastern facing shorelines of Hampton Roads and middle peninsula Saturday morning and afternoon due to a period of prolonged strong onshore flow. Tidal departures could reach 2 to 2.5 ft above mean lower low water... which can produce minor to moderate tidal flooding. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A coastal Flood Watch means that conditions favorable for flooding are expected to develop. Coastal residents should be alert for later statements or warnings... and take action to protect property. |
