Statement as of 9:31 PM EST on November 10, 2009 ... Flood Watch remains in effect from 6 am EST Wednesday through Thursday afternoon... The Flood Watch continues for * portions of North Carolina and Virginia... including the following areas... in North Carolina... Bertie... Camden... Chowan... gates... Hertford... inland Currituck... Northampton NC... Outer Banks Currituck... Pasquotank and Perquimans. In Virginia... Brunswick... Charles City... Chesapeake... Dinwiddie... Gloucester... Greensville... Isle of Wight... James City... Lunenburg... Mathews... Mecklenburg... Newport News/Hampton... Norfolk/Portsmouth... Northampton VA... Nottoway... Prince Edward... Prince George... Southampton... Suffolk... Surry... Sussex... Virginia Beach and York. * From 6 am EST Wednesday through Thursday afternoon * periods of heavy rain are expected beginning Veterans Day... and lasting into Thursday. Total rainfall amounts of 4 to 6 inches are anticipated through 600 PM Thursday evening... with locally higher amounts possible. * Periods of heavy rainfall may cause flooding of creeks and small streams Wednesday through Thursday. In addition... river levels are expected to rise significantly... with minor river flooding possible late in the week on western portions of the Appomattox and Chowan river basins. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts. You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop. 923 PM EST Tue Nov 10 2009 ... Coastal Flood Watch remains in effect from late Wednesday night through Friday afternoon... A coastal Flood Watch remains in effect from late Wednesday night through Friday afternoon. A combination of strong high pressure building from the north and remnants of Ida off the southeast coast... will allow an extended period of strong onshore flow to develop across the middle Chesapeake Bay area. The approaching new phase of the moon... in tandem with the strong onshore flow... will lead to increasing tidal anomalies of around 2 ft above normal... beginning late Wednesday night and continuing through Friday afternoon. This will likely result in minor to moderate coastal flooding... with the greatest threat coming with the Thursday and Friday high tide cycles. Impacts are expected to be well below those experienced during Isabel and Ernesto... in most cases by 1.5 to 2 feet. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A coastal Flood Watch means that conditions favorable for flooding are expected to develop. Coastal residents should be alert for later statements or warnings... and take action to protect property. |
