Statement as of 10:06 PM EST on December 17, 2009 ... Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Friday afternoon through Saturday evening... A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Friday afternoon through Saturday evening. A mix of rain and snow is expected to develop over much of central and Southside Virginia later Friday afternoon... as a low pressure system strengthens along the southeast United States coast. For Friday night... mainly snow is expected to the west of Interstate 95... with the snow possibly mixing with rain or sleet along and to the east of Interstate 95. After daybreak Saturday... the entire area should see a changeover to all snow. Significant accumulations of snow are expected... with 6 to 12 inches from Friday night through Saturday evening. There is the potential for more than 12 inches of snow well to the west and northwest of Richmond... to include the Piedmont counties. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for significant snow... sleet... or ice accumulations that may impact travel. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts.
