Statement as of 4:15 AM CST on December 25, 2009 ... Icy Road conditions will persist into the mid to late morning hours... Residual snow and ice on area roadways will make for hazardous driving conditions... especially for locations northwest of a line from Comanche... to Dallas... to Sherman. The combination of dry air and sunny skies should help clear roadways of any remaining ice and snow by the mid to late morning hours. However... some icy spots in shaded areas underneath overpasses may persist into the afternoon hours. Delay travel until late morning if possible. Otherwise... please travel with extreme caution and allow extra time to reach your destination. If you begin to lose control of your vehicle on an icy Road... calmly turn into the skid and decelerate until you regain control. 819 PM CST Thu Dec 24 2009 ... Icy travel conditions are expected overnight... Widespread rain transitioned into snow across much of North Texas today and has left residual moisture on area roadways. With temperatures below freezing... many bridges and overpasses have already iced over and conditions are expected to worsen as temperatures continue to drop. With nighttime lows in the teens to middle 20s... secondary roads will also be icy. Sunny skies are expected tomorrow... with temperatures rising above the freezing mark between 10 am and noon. Residents are urged to stay off the roadways tonight. If you must travel... please exercise extreme caution. Slow down... especially when crossing bridges and overpasses. If you lose control due to icy conditions... do not slam your brakes or accelerate suddenly and always turn into the skid. |

This is the first measurable snowfall on record for Christmas eve. Trace snowfall amounts were previously recorded on December 24 in 1924... 1926... 1943... 1975... and 2002. |
