Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Precipitation will spread across the East Coast on Saturday, while more rain and mountain snow showers are anticipated for parts of the West. A trough of low pressure and associated cold front continue moving eastward across the Eastern Valleys into the Eastern Seaboard. Cool temperatures to the north will allow for snow showers to develop across the Northeast and New England, while rain showers are likely over the Mid-Atlantic states. Rain showers over the Southeastern states should wind down in the early morning hours as the tail end of the system pushes offshore early in the day. Expect the New York metropolitan area to see 1 to 3 inches of snow, while the Washington D.C. area will see a messy combination of snow and freezing rain as high temperatures reach into the lower 40s.

Behind this system, a ridge of high pressure continues to build in from the Plains, pushing cold and dry air in from Canada. This allows for plenty of sunshine to spread from the Plains over the Mississippi River Valley and into the Eastern Valleys. Expect the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest to see highs in the teens again, while the Midwest will see highs in the 20s. Strong winds will accompany this system, pushing windchill values below zero in these areas. The Southern Plains will remain in the 40s on Saturday.

Out West, a trough of low pressure pushes a cold front over the Pacific Northwest and continues pulling moisture onshore with it. This will kick up more rain showers with high elevation snow showers likely in the Cascades. The tail end of the frontal boundary will sweep through California, bringing light rain showers to the coasts and interior valleys. Expect light snow showers in the Sierra Nevadas by Saturday evening.

Winter Weather Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:18 PM CST on February 11, 2012

... Winter Weather Advisory in effect from noon Sunday to midnight
CST Sunday night...

The National Weather Service in Amarillo has issued a Winter
Weather Advisory for snow... which is in effect from noon Sunday to
midnight CST Sunday night.

* Event... snow is expected to develop across the eastern Texas and
Oklahoma panhandles Sunday afternoon and night. Snowfall
accumulations of 1 to 3 inches... with locally higher amounts of up
to 5 inches across the far southeastern Texas Panhandle... can be
expected.

* Timing... snow will develop and overspread the eastern portions of
the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles shortly after noon. Snow will
continue through the afternoon and evening hours before tapering
off around midnight.

* Impacts... roads and bridges may become slick from the
snow... leading to hazardous travel conditions. In
addition... strong south winds may occasionally reduce visibilities
due to blowing snow.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow... sleet... or
freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for
slippery roads and limited visibilities... and use caution while
driving.

Special Weather Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 5:53 AM CST on February 11, 2012

... Cold weather continues through the weekend with snow possible
tomorrow...

Many locations across the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles will not get
above freezing until Monday. Highs today and tomorrow will range
from the mid 20s to the mid 30s. Low temperatures tonight will be
in the teens. This combined with breezy conditions will lead to wind
chill values near or below zero tomorrow morning.

Snow could begin in the southwestern Texas Panhandle tomorrow
morning before spreading across much of the region tomorrow
afternoon. Precipitation is expected to be mainly in the form of
snow except in the western Oklahoma and northwestern Texas
panhandles... which could see a rain and snow mix tomorrow
afternoon. Snow will end from west to east tomorrow night. Snow
totals are expected to range from less than one half inch in the
northwest... to near three inches in the southeastern Texas
Panhandle.

Stay tuned to any updates to the forecast by visiting our website at
www.Srh.NOAA.Gov/Ama... following NWS Amarillo on facebook... listening
to NOAA Weather Radio... or through your preferred media outlet.
