... Coastal Flood Warning now in effect until 3 PM CST this afternoon...
The coastal Flood Warning is now in effect until 3 PM CST this afternoon.
.Northeast winds will prevail today in response to low pressure over the Gulf of Mexico and high pressure over the middle Tennessee Valley. Swells will propagate toward the Upper Texas coast this morning which will help to maintain elevated tide levels. The swells will decrease during the late morning and tide levels on the Gulf side will slowly diminish.
The northeast winds will push water from Galveston Bay on to the back side of Galveston Island. This will raise tide levels on the western end of Galveston Island. Reports from Jamaica Beach already indicate high water over parts of the community. Because moderate northeast winds are expected today... tide levels on the back side of the island will remain elevated. Therefore... the coastal Flood Warning has been extended through 3 PM this afternoon.
High tide occurred earlier this morning and tide levels will continue to slowly drop during the day. The main impacts will be beach flooding and minor flooding of low lying coastal roads.
Note: tide levels are referenced from mean lower low water
A coastal Flood Warning means that flooding is occurring or imminent. Coastal residents in the warned area should be alert for rising water... and take appropriate action to protect life and property. Do not venture into the water as tidal currents may be very strong.
