Public Information Statement
Statement as of 6:43 am CDT on October 1, 2014

...Warmer with a mix of wetter and drier than normal conditions...

September 2014 ended slightly warmer than normal across southeast Texas. Two frontal passages brought enough rainfall to help ease the year-to-date rainfall deficits at most of the climate sites. Seven sites even ended September with above normal monthly rainfall. Even so...9-month double digit rainfall deficits were still being experienced along the coastal counties.

None of the first-order climate sites recorded a 100-degree day in September. With the arrival of autumn on the 22nd...this means the Summer ended without a recorded 100-degree date for all four sites in 2014. Although hobby Airport and the city of Galveston record more years without a 100-degree date...1983 was the last year that all four locations failed to reach at least 100 degrees in the same year. The following list gives the last year without a 100-degree date for the first-order climate sites.

City of Houston.....1997 College Station.....2004 city of Galveston...2013 Houston hobby.......2010

Very dry conditions have persisted since the beginning of the year west of the Colorado River. For example...the second-order climate site at Palacios has only recorded three days since January 1st with a daily rainfall of 1 inch or more...1.00 on March 4th...1.06 on may 13th...and 1.29 on June 26th. The following table lists the U.S. Drought monitor indices as of September 23rd for the NWS Houston County warning and forecast area...
