Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Precipitation will spread across the East Coast on Saturday, while more rain and mountain snow showers are anticipated for parts of the West. A trough of low pressure and associated cold front continue moving eastward across the Eastern Valleys into the Eastern Seaboard. Cool temperatures to the north will allow for snow showers to develop across the Northeast and New England, while rain showers are likely over the Mid-Atlantic states. Rain showers over the Southeastern states should wind down in the early morning hours as the tail end of the system pushes offshore early in the day. Expect the New York metropolitan area to see 1 to 3 inches of snow, while the Washington D.C. area will see a messy combination of snow and freezing rain as high temperatures reach into the lower 40s.

Behind this system, a ridge of high pressure continues to build in from the Plains, pushing cold and dry air in from Canada. This allows for plenty of sunshine to spread from the Plains over the Mississippi River Valley and into the Eastern Valleys. Expect the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest to see highs in the teens again, while the Midwest will see highs in the 20s. Strong winds will accompany this system, pushing windchill values below zero in these areas. The Southern Plains will remain in the 40s on Saturday.

Out West, a trough of low pressure pushes a cold front over the Pacific Northwest and continues pulling moisture onshore with it. This will kick up more rain showers with high elevation snow showers likely in the Cascades. The tail end of the frontal boundary will sweep through California, bringing light rain showers to the coasts and interior valleys. Expect light snow showers in the Sierra Nevadas by Saturday evening.

Winter Weather Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 1:49 AM EST on February 11, 2012

... Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 PM EST this
evening...

* event... low pressure and much colder temperatures should bring
snowfall accumulations over the northern Cumberland Plateau and
parts of northeast TN and southwest VA. A general snowfall of 1
to 3 inches is expected... with locally heavier amounts of 2 to 6
inches in the higher terrain of the smokies and northern
mountains of east TN.

* Timing... light rain and snow will spread across northeast TN and
southwest VA... changing to all snow this morning. Accumulating
snow showers should linger at least into early this evening...
especially in areas where upslope brisk northwest winds occur.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow are
expected or occurring... but accumulations are expected to be
light. Driving and walking may be difficult on untreated roadways
and sidewalks. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited
visibilities. If you must travel... slow down and allow extra time
to reach your destination.

Wind Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 7:57 PM CST on February 10, 2012

... Wind Advisory remains in effect from 7 am EST /6 am CST/ to
7 PM EST /6 PM CST/ Saturday...

* timing... a cold front will move through the southern Appalachians
early Saturday. Northwest winds will increase rapidly behind the
front. Sustained wind speeds of 20 to 30 mph can be expected.

* Impacts... these winds may down trees or tree limbs... and power
lines. Loose outdoor objects should be secured. Motorists
should be extra cautious to cross winds when driving in the
higher elevations.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Wind Advisory means that winds of 26 to 39 mph and/or gusts of
40 to 57 mph are expected or occurring. Winds this strong can
make driving difficult... especially for high profile vehicles...
so use caution when driving.
