Statement as of 2:48 AM MST on December 25, 2009 ... Blizzard Warning remains in effect until noon CST /11 am MST/ Saturday... A Blizzard Warning remains in effect until noon CST /11 am MST/ Saturday. * Periods of snow with continue Friday into Saturday. The snow will begin to drop in intensity and coverage during the evening Saturday. * Snowfall amounts are expected to range from 9 to 12 inches across central and north central South Dakota and 11 to 15 inches in the James Valley and Sisseton hills. Widespread blowing and drifting will also occur. * The region will experience northwest winds of 25 to 40 mph with higher gusts. These strong winds will continue through Saturday morning. Wind chill values this morning will range from -20 to -30 degrees. * Intense snowfall rates of an inch or two an hour today... when combined with such intense winds... will be responsible for whiteout conditions. I-29 is closed from the Iowa border to the North Dakota border. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Blizzard Warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds and poor visibilities are likely. This will lead to whiteout conditions... making travel extremely dangerous. Do not travel. If you must travel... have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded... stay with your vehicle.
