Statement as of 4:30 AM CST on December 22, 2009 ... Winter Storm Warning in effect from noon Wednesday to 6 PM CST Friday... The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls has issued a Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow and blowing snow... which is in effect from noon Wednesday to 6 PM CST Friday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect. * Timing... snow will spread north across the area on Wednesday. There could be a brief period for sleet or freezing rain toward the Iowa border later Wednesday night or Thursday. Snow will become widespread again Thursday night into early Friday. * Accumulations... snowfall totals of 12 to 18 inches are anticipated with this storm... with the heaviest amounts likely across southeast South Dakota. * Wind and visibility... northeast winds of 10 to 20 mph can be expected Wednesday... increasing gradually through Wednesday night... and reaching 25 to 35 mph out of the north Thursday through Friday. The wind combined with the snowfall will likely reduce visibilities to near zero at times. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency. If you must travel... keep an extra flashlight... food... and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
