Statement as of 8:37 PM CST on December 22, 2009 ... Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 3 PM Wednesday to 6 PM CST Friday... A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 3 PM Wednesday to 6 PM CST Friday. * Timing... snow will spread north into the area by late Wednesday morning and become heavy by late Wednesday afternoon. There could be a brief period for sleet or freezing rain toward the Iowa border later Wednesday night or Thursday. Snow will become widespread again Thursday night into early Friday. * Accumulations... snowfall totals of 12 to 18 inches are anticipated with this storm... with the heaviest amounts likely across southeast South Dakota. * Wind and visibility... northeast winds of 10 to 20 mph can be expected Wednesday... increasing gradually Wednesday night and Thursday... reaching 25 to 35 mph out of the north Thursday night and Friday. The wind combined with the snowfall will likely reduce visibilities to near zero at times. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency. If you must travel... keep an extra flashlight... food... and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. |
