... National Weather Service Rapid City South Dakota commissions the radiosonde replacement system...
After extensive testing... on September 30 2009... NOAA/S National Weather Service office in Rapid City South Dakota officially commissioned the radiosonde replacement system /rrs/ which is an integral component of the upper air observation program. This system commissioning includes advanced technologies such as tracking utilizing the global positioning system.
The rrs network serves as an integral component in gathering weather data from the atmosphere. The data format of the upper air observations will remain the same although the length of the coded messages will increase due to higher resolution of data. The changes are reflected in modeling and forecasts issued by the National Weather Service.
The rrs supports NOAA/S cross-cutting priority to integrate global environmental observations and data management and provides critical support for noaa's mission.
