The month of June began with temperatures and rainfall close to normal... however by the middle and end of the month temperatures gradually increased and rainfall decreased. The month began a nearly zonal flow across the country with a weak trough across the southeast. By the middle portion of the month a ridge of high pressure built into the Central Plains and extended eastward into the southeastern state. This feature gradually moved to the western portion of the country by the end of the month. There were several events that produced damaging winds and hail. The most widespread events occurred on the 1st... 11th... 16th and 18th. The average temperature at Columbia Metro Airport was 80.9 degrees... this was the 13th warmest June on record. The temperatures reached 100 degrees on the 27th at both Columbia Metro Airport and Augusta regional Bush Field.
Precipitation for the month varied from around 1 to 3 inches across the central Savannah River area to over 8 inches across the eastern Midland counties of Lee and Sumter.
