Coastal Flood Watch
Statement as of 10:22 AM EST on December 01, 2009
... Coastal Flood Watch remains in effect from late tonight through Wednesday morning...
A coastal Flood Watch remains in effect from late tonight through Wednesday morning.
A strong low pressure system developing over the Gulf of Mexico will track west of the region on Wednesday. This storm system will produce periods of heavy rainfall and strong onshore winds across south coastal South Carolina and north coastal Georgia. At the same time that these heavy rains and strong winds will be impacting the region... high astronomical tides will also be occurring. Tidal departures will thus be significantly higher than predicted... possibly reaching 7.8 ft in Charleston Harbor and 9.8 ft at fort Pulaski with the Wednesday morning high tide. As a result... significant coastal flooding is possible.
Locations particularly vulnerable to coastal flooding and beach erosion include but are not limited to downtown Charleston... wild dunes... Folly Beach... Edisto Beach... Hunting Island... Fripp Island... Tybee Island... Saint Catherines Island and Sapelo Island.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A coastal Flood Watch means that coastal flooding is possible. Residents and visitors in coastal areas should be prepared to protect property if warnings are issued.
