... Coastal Flood Advisory now in effect until 10 am EST this
morning...
The coastal Flood Advisory is now in effect until 10 am EST this
morning for the southern South Carolina and the southeast Georgia
coastal areas.
Elevated tides will once again impact the southern South Carolina
and southeast Georgia coasts this morning. The combination of
high astronomical tides and remnant swells from a departing storm
well off the coast of the southeast United States... will continue
to enhance the tidal departures during the high tide cycle this
morning. High tide will occur at 713 am EST in Charleston
Harbor... 719 am EST at the Savannah River entrance... and 828 am
EST in Beaufort.
Many locations... such as low lying areas near and along the
beaches... near marshes and tidal creeks... along portions of the
intracoastal and tidal rivers will be affected by the elevated
tides.
The tide levels are expected to reach between 7.5 and 7.7 feet
mean lower low water in the Charleston Harbor... producing moderate
coastal flooding along parts of the southern South Carolina coast.
Salt water will rise into yards... streets and driveways across
parts of downtown Charleston... especially in locations that often
experience flooding during the high tide events.
Other locations that will be impacted... include but are not
limited to Isle of Palms... Sullivans Island... Seabrook Island...
Edisto Island... Edisto Beach... Hunting Island and Ladys Island
near Beaufort. In addition to the coastal flooding concerns... at
least minor beach erosion is expected to occur.
Tide levels are expected to reach between 9.3 and 9.5 feet mean
lower low water at the Savannah River entrance at fort
Pulaski... producing minor to locally moderate coastal flooding
along parts of the southeast Georgia coast. Salt water will
approach and possibly cover portions of Highway 80 between
Savannah and Tybee Island. Other locations that often experience
flooding during the high tide events will likely see some impacts
from the salt water rise as well.
In addition to the coastal flooding... minor beach erosion will
also occur around the times of high tide.
Vehicles that are parked in the flood prone areas should be moved
to higher ground. If traveling Monday morning... pay close
attention for water covering the Road. Never drive through water
of unknown depth.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A coastal Flood Advisory indicates that winds and tides will
combine to generate some salt water flooding of low-lying areas
near the coast. Shallow coastal flooding begins along the
southern South Carolina coast when tides in the Charleston Harbor
reach 7.0 feet mean lower low water and along the northern
Georgia coast when tides reach 9.2 feet mean lower low water at
fort Pulaski.
