Statement as of 10:52 AM EST on November 11, 2009 The National Weather Service in Columbia has issued a * Flood Warning for the Congaree River at Sandy Run * from Thursday evening to Monday afternoon... or until the warning is cancelled. * At 8 am Wednesday the stage was 12.9 feet. * Flood stage is 23.0 feet. * Moderate flooding is forecast. * Forecast... the river will rise above flood Stage Lake tomorrow evening and crest around 24.0 feet Saturday morning. The river will fall below flood stage Sunday. * At 24.0 feet... several homes in the Sandy Run subdivision along the river become flooded. * This stage compares to a previous crest of 24.0 feet which occurred on Apr 21 2003. 909 am EST Wed Nov 11 2009 The National Weather Service in Columbia has issued a * Flood Warning for the Congaree River at Carolina Eastman * from Thursday afternoon to Sunday evening... or until the warning is cancelled. * At 7 am Wednesday the stage was 110.1 feet. * Flood stage is 115.0 feet. * Minor flooding is forecast. * Forecast... the river will rise above flood stage tomorrow afternoon and crest around 118.7 feet Friday evening. The river will fall below flood stage Saturday. * At 119.0 feet... extensive flooding occurs in the Congaree National Park. Some area farmland is flooded. Minor flooding occurs at the Carolina Eastman facility. |

Calhoun County in central South Carolina... Chesterfield County in central South Carolina... this includes the city of Cheraw... Clarendon County in central South Carolina... this includes the city of Manning... Kershaw County in central South Carolina... this includes the city of Camden... Lancaster County in central South Carolina... Lee County in central South Carolina... this includes the city of Bishopville... Orangeburg County in central South Carolina... this includes the cities of... Orangeburg... Brookdale... Richland County in central South Carolina... Sumter County in central South Carolina... this includes the cities of... Sumter... South Sumter... * until 1145 am EST * much of the area has had... or will receive... rain totals of 2 to 5 inches. Some flooding will occur along small streams and poor-drainage areas. A Flood Watch also remains in effect for the area... and significant flooding is possible. Listen for later statements and possible warnings. Precautionary/preparedness actions... Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually deeper than they appear. Flood Watch remains in effect through this evening... The Flood Watch continues for * portions of east central Georgia and central South Carolina... including the following areas... in east central Georgia... Burke... Columbia... Lincoln... The National Weather Service in Columbia has issued a lake Wind Advisory... which is in effect until 11 PM Thursday. Low pressure near the coast will bring northeast to north winds of 15 to 25 knots through Thursday. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A lake Wind Advisory indicates that winds will cause rough chop on area lakes. Small boats and personal watercraft will be especially prone to capsizing. |
