Coastal Flood Warning, High Surf Advisory
Statement as of 3:41 AM EST on December 02, 2009
... Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 11 am EST this morning... ... High surf advisory remains in effect until 5 am EST Thursday...
A coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 11 am EST this morning. A high surf advisory remains in effect until 5 am EST Thursday.
A strong low pressure system developing along the northern Gulf Coast states this morning will track west of the region today. This storm system will produce periods of heavy rainfall and strong onshore winds across south coastal South Carolina and north coastal Georgia. At the same time that these heavy rains and strong winds will be impacting the region... high astronomical tides will also be occurring. Tidal departures will thus be significantly higher than predicted... reaching between 7.8 and 8.0 feet mean lower low water in Charleston Harbor and 9.8 and 10.0 feet mean lower low water at fort Pulaski with the morning high tide today. As a result... a coastal Flood Warning remains in effect for south coastal South Carolina and north coastal Georgia... with significant coastal flooding anticipated. Many locations along the South Carolina coast and Georgia coast will experience flooding due to the elevated tides.
Salt water will rise into yards... streets and driveways across parts of downtown Charleston... especially in locations that often experience flooding during high tide events. Highway 80 leading to Tybee Island Georgia will also be impacted... with high water possibly making the roadway impassable. Many other coastal locations will also be impacted... including but not limited to Isle of Palms... Sullivans Island... Seabrook Island... Edisto Island... Edisto Beach... Hunting Island... Ladys Island... Saint Catherines Island and Sapelo Island.
The strong onshore winds will also result in dangerous breaking waves reaching 5 to 6 feet in the surf zone along the South Carolina and Georgia coast today through tonight. Therefore... a high surf advisory continues for north coastal Georgia and south coastal South Carolina.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A coastal Flood Warning means that coastal flooding is expected. Coastal residents and visitors in the warned area should be alert for rising water and should take appropriate action to protect life and property.
A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in the advisory area... producing dangerous rip currents and some beach erosion. South and southeast facing beaches will be the most susceptible to erosion with this event.
