Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Cold air poured into the Plains on Saturday, while snow showers developed in parts of the Northeast. A strong low pressure system that brought heavy rain to the Southern Plains and Southeast has advanced eastward and off the East Coast into the Atlantic Ocean. However, counter-clockwise flow around this system continued to push moisture into the Northeast, Great Lakes, and Ohio River Valley. In addition to cool air over the region, this allowed for snow showers to develop across Michigan and the Ohio River Valley. Snowfall accumulations ranged from 1 to 3 inches in most areas, with up to 5 inches at higher elevations of the Central Appalachians. Coastal regions remained slightly warmer, which maintained light rain showers from southern Maine through Virginia.

Behind this system, a dominant ridge of high pressure continued to build over the Plains. This system started to stretch eastward over the Mississippi Valley. Flow around this system pulled cold air in from central Canada and kept seasonable cool temperatures over the Central US. High temperatures only reached into the 30s in parts of northern Texas, while the Central and Northern Plains saw highs in the teens, with overnight lows in the negative teens.

Out West, cool conditions persisted with areas of wet weather as a trough of low pressure moved over the Pacific Northwest and into the Intermountain West and Great Basin. Rainfall totals and high elevation snow accumulation remained light. A few light rain showers extended into California as moist onshore flow persisted.

Lake Wind Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 5:05 PM EST on February 11, 2012

... Lake Wind Advisory now in effect until 6 am EST Sunday...

* locations... foothills and Piedmont of the Carolinas and
northeast Georgia.

* Hazards... windy conditions on area lakes.

* Timing... gusty northwest winds will continue through the
overnight hours. The strongest gusts will occur through the
middle to late part of the evening.

* Winds... northwest 20 to 25 mph with gusts to 30 to 40 mph.

* Impacts... conditions will be unsafe for boating on area lakes.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A lake Wind Advisory indicates that winds will cause rough chop
on area lakes. Small boats will be especially prone to capsizing.

Special Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:22 PM EST on February 11, 2012

... Increased fire danger from Sunday morning through Sunday
evening...

Gusty northwest winds will continue to usher in a very dry and
cold air mass across the area through the weekend. Very low
dewpoints will result in relative humidity falling to 15 to 25
percent Sunday afternoon across northeast Georgia... upstate South
Carolina... and the foothills... western Piedmont... and southern
mountains of North Carolina. Northwest winds of 10 to 15
mph... with gusts around 20 mph will combine with the low relative
humidity to enhance the potential for the spread of wildfire.

Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities on whether
you can burn tomorrow. If you do burn... use extreme caution since
fires can quickly get out of hand under these conditions.

Lane

Fire Weather Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 12:08 PM EST on February 11, 2012

... Red flag warning remains in effect until 6 PM EST this evening
for gusty winds and dry conditions for the upstate of South
Carolina and northeast Georgia...

A red flag warning remains in effect until 6 PM EST this evening.

* Locations... the upstate of South Carolina and northeast
Georgia.

* Timing... noon to 6 PM today.

* Winds... northwest 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.

* Humidity... rapidly falling to as low as 22 percent by mid
afternoon.

* Fuel moisture... will continue to dry as no rainfall is
expected with the cold frontal passage.

* Impacts... wild fire potential will increase this afternoon.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now... or will shortly. A combination of
strong winds... low relative humidity... and warm temperatures will
create explosive fire growth potential.
