The mighty 'Noreaster of December 2009 has moved out to sea, taking most of its snow with it, but a very white Christmas is in store for millions of U.S. residents, thanks to the 1 - 2 feet of snow the storm left behind, from the Smoky Mountains to Massachusetts. Did you know that...
A temperature inversion is when the temperature near the surface actually rises with height. This type of atmosphere can be very stable and hampers vertical motion. On this date in 1994, a strong temperature inversion occurred over Chicago, trapping carbon monoxide in the pollouted air below the inversion.
