It's an El Niño year, which typically means that Atlantic hurricane activity will be reduced. But not all El Niño events are created equal when it comes to their impact on Atlantic hurricane activity. Over the past 150 years, hurricane damage has averaged $800 million/year in El Niño years and double that during La Niña years. Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday, July 09, 2009.
Severe weather is anticipated across the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest on Thursday. A strong low pressure system moving through Canada will continue pulling warm and moist air northward, creating an intense warm front that will be sufficient to produce scattered showers and thunderstorms. Many of these storms will turn severe as the storm has a history of producing large hail, damaging winds, and heavy downpours. The trough will extend over the Central and Southern Plains, continuing to pull in warm air from the south, allowing for another day of unbearable heat. Expect temperatures to reach into the 105-112 range for many areas of Texas and Oklahoma. Moisture will remain to the west and will allow for monsoon convection over Arizona and New Mexico. These storms will be at high levels in the atmosphere, and with dry surface conditions, most rainfall is expected to evaporate before reaching the surface.
The Pacific Northwest will start to dry out on Thursday as the low pressure system advances eastward. Expect warmer temperatures and clearer skies with highs in the mid-70s.
In the East, high pressure will build east of the Mississippi on Thursday, allowing for mostly sunny skies and pleasant weather. The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic will continue to see highs in the 70s and 80s. However, a stationary front dominating over the Southeast is expected to continue triggering scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. Humid conditions will persist with some areas experiencing severe weather.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 30 degrees at Truckee-Tahoe, Calif to a high of 105 degrees at Hearne, Texas.
Tucson, Ariz. reported a high temperature of over 100 degrees for the 33rd consecutive day on this date in 1987. What is even more remarkable than that is the morning low was 68 degrees, the 4th record breaking low in the past five days.
