The National Weather Service in San Juan has extended the
* Flash Flood Warning for... the following municipalities
in Puerto Rico Bayamon Guaynabo Catano San Juan
* until 730 PM AST
* at 407 PM AST... heavy rains have ended... but record flooding continues in the San Juan Metro area. River gages indicate record flood levels reached during hurricane Hortense in 1996 have been broken this afternoon by over 1 foot on the Rio Piedras from cupey to hato rey. Several roads are closed and major flooding has caused disruption throughout the Guaynabo and hato rey areas.
This is a very serious flood event... never try to cross a flooded roadway.
Flood waters appear to be cresting now. The Rio Piedras in hato rey reached 23.42 feet at 4:00 PM AST. This breaks the previous record of 22.11 feet during hurricane Hortense in 1996. Expect waters to slowly recede over the next three hours... while levels remain at major flood stage.

At 308 PM AST... river gages indicate major flooding currently occurring on the Rio Piedras has reach record flood levels.
At 3:00 PM AST... the Rio Piedras at senorial in the cupey area... registered 16.62 feet. This breaks the previous record level of 16.06 feet on August 24... 1988. Also of note... hurricane Georges of 1999 produced 15.28 feet at this same location. Several reports of major flooding have been received by the NWS.
This situation should be taken very seriously. Move away from flood waters immediately and never try to cross a flooded roadway under any circumstance.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Flash Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. If you are in the warning area move to higher ground immediately. Residents living along streams and creeks should take immediate precautions to protect life and property. Do not attempt to cross swiftly flowing waters or waters of unknown depth by foot or by automobile.
