Tropical Weather: Tropical Cyclone Jasmine (Southern Pacific) Tropical Cyclone Cyril (Southern Pacific)
Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Monday, February 06, 2012. A rare February tropical disturbance continued to bring heavy rain and thunderstorms to south Florida to the tone of several inches. Even if the disturbance does not develop further, widespread rain and thunderstorms will continue through the rest of the day.

This precipitation represented the only significant precipitation in the country, further prolonging the relatively dry and mild Winter the country has experienced. The only other light precipitation was high elevation snow that fell in the Colorado Rockies.

Generally mild temperatures continued for much of the country, as been a staple for nearly the entire Winter. The coldest areas were noted in the Northern Rockies and Intermountain West where afternoon temperatures were still in the 20s and 30s for most areas.

The Northeast rose into the 40s, while the Southeast saw temperatures in the 60s, 70s, and some 80s in Florida. The Northwest rose into the 40s and 50s, while the Southwest saw temperatures in the 40s, 50s, and 60s.

High Surf Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:50 PM AST on February 06, 2012

... High surf advisory now in effect until 8 am AST Tuesday...

The high surf advisory is now in effect until 8 am AST Tuesday.

* Waves and surf: north swells of 6 to 8 feet will result in
large breaking waves of 10 to 16 feet and locally higher... and
frequent strong rip currents.

* Timing: very rough and dangerous surf conditions will occur
through at least Monday evening.

* Impacts: large breaking waves... frequent and strong rip
currents and beach erosion are expected.

* The times and heights of the next high tides for the following
locations are:

San Juan harbor: 8:14 am AST at 1.5 feet and 7:32 PM AST at
0.9 feet.

Magens Bay St thomas: 8:44 am AST Monday morning at 1.1 feet.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing rip currents and localized beach
erosion. Stay well away from the water where breaking waves can
wash over rocks. Strong currents can carry swimmers toward rocks
and certain injury or death. If you get caught in a rip current
do not panic. Swim parallel to the beach to get out of the narrow
current... then you can swim toward the beach.
