Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Cold air poured into the Plains on Saturday, while snow showers developed in parts of the Northeast. A strong low pressure system that brought heavy rain to the Southern Plains and Southeast has advanced eastward and off the East Coast into the Atlantic Ocean. However, counter-clockwise flow around this system continued to push moisture into the Northeast, Great Lakes, and Ohio River Valley. In addition to cool air over the region, this allowed for snow showers to develop across Michigan and the Ohio River Valley. Snowfall accumulations ranged from 1 to 3 inches in most areas, with up to 5 inches at higher elevations of the Central Appalachians. Coastal regions remained slightly warmer, which maintained light rain showers from southern Maine through Virginia.

Behind this system, a dominant ridge of high pressure continued to build over the Plains. This system started to stretch eastward over the Mississippi Valley. Flow around this system pulled cold air in from central Canada and kept seasonable cool temperatures over the Central US. High temperatures only reached into the 30s in parts of northern Texas, while the Central and Northern Plains saw highs in the teens, with overnight lows in the negative teens.

Out West, cool conditions persisted with areas of wet weather as a trough of low pressure moved over the Pacific Northwest and into the Intermountain West and Great Basin. Rainfall totals and high elevation snow accumulation remained light. A few light rain showers extended into California as moist onshore flow persisted.

northern West Virginia... and western Maryland.

* Hazard types... heavy snow showers with blowing and drifting
snow.

* Accumulations... 6 to 10 inches of snow.

* Timing... snow showers and blowing snow will continue into
early Sunday morning.

* Impacts... hazardous travel conditions are expected due to
reduced visibility and snow accumulation. Strong winds will
cause blowing and drifting of snow and subzero wind chills by
tonight.

* Winds... northwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.

* Temperatures... 10 to 15 above. Wind chill down to 15 below.

* Visibilities... near zero at times in snow and blowing snow
today and tonight.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Warning for snow and blowing snow means that heavy
snowfall will make travel dangerous. If you must venture out at
all... use extreme caution. Report snow accumulation to the
National Weather Service by calling toll free... 1-877-633-6772.

A Wind Chill Advisory means that very cold air and strong wind
will produce low wind chill indices. This could result in frost
bite and hypothermia if precautions are not taken. If you must
venture outdoors... make sure you dress properly.

At 606 PM EST National Weather Service Doppler radar in Pittsburgh
indicated bands of heavy snow showers along a line extending from 3
miles east of Columbiana to 4 miles east of New Manchester to 5 miles
northeast of Avella to 4 miles west of Bentleyville... moving
northeast at 20 mph.

Some locations that will be impacted by these bands of heavy snow
showers include...
Beaver Creek State Park... Columbiana... East Liverpool... East
Palestine... Avella... Bentleyville... Brownsville... Burgettstown...
California... Canonsburg... Enterprise... Florence... Harshaville...
Hopwood... Raccoon Creek State Park... Uniontown... Waltersburg...

to near zero at times.

Please report snow amounts to the National Weather Service by calling
toll free... 1-877-633-6772.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Travelers need to be alert for conditions suddenly becoming hazardous
as untreated pavements can become quickly snow covered and slippery
and visibilities sharply reduced. Gusty winds can add blowing snow to
the wintry weather hazards.
