... Winter weather impact statement...
Valid...
Today through tonight
Winter weather expected...
Snow... mainly across the southwest Texas Panhandle.
Affected area...
The southwest part of the Texas Panhandle will have the largest accumulations and the greatest impacts. Across the remaining parts of the Texas Panhandle... and the western half of the Oklahoma Panhandle... periods of light snow are possible... but little or no accumulations are expected.
Forecast timing of the event...
Snow showers are expected to become more numerous this afternoon and this evening... particularly across the southwest part of the Texas Panhandle. Periods of light to moderate snow will continue this evening... and then diminish before sunrise Friday.
Potential impacts...
Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are possible in the southwest Texas Panhandle. Across remaining sections of the panhandles... any snow accumulations should be less than an inch. Across the region... northeast winds of 10 to 15 mph are expected to prevail. Thus... widespread blowing snow or drifting snow are not expected.
Roads could become snow packed across the southwest Texas Panhandle this afternoon through tonight... including Interstate 40 west of Wildorado and U.S. Highway 60 west of dawn.
Discussion...
Cold air remains in place following the passage of the cold front early yesterday. As surface winds become more northeast and easterly... upslope flow will assist in the production of snow. An upper level jet streak will also traverse the area... and will provide additional lift for snow production.
