November 8 through 14 is winter weather awareness week in West Virginia. Here are some suggestions on what you can do to prepare for winter weather.
Keep posted on weather conditions. Listen to NOAA Weather Radio all hazards or media outlets for the latest information on upcoming winter weather events.
A Winter Weather Advisory means there is a possibility of accumulations of snow, freezing rain, or sleet, which may cause significant inconvenience and dangerous conditions.
A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for heavy snow, significant icing, or a combination of these events. Watches are usually issued 12 to 36 hours in advance.
An Ice Storm Warning is issued when a quarter of an inch of ice or more is expected. A Winter Storm Warning is issued when 6 inches or more of snow or a combination of heavy snow and ice is expected to occur. Warnings are usually issued 6 to 24 hours in advance.
A Blizzard Warning is issued when winds of 35 mph or more and falling or blowing snow reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile are expected to persist for three hours or more.
A Wind Chill Advisory is issued when wind chill temperatures are expected to be between minus 10 and minus 24 degrees with wind speeds of 10 mph or more.
Wind chill warnings are issued when wind chill temperatures are expected to be less than or equal to minus 25 degrees with wind speeds of 10 mph or more.
Be prepared for winter. Store emergency supplies in your home and car. Make plans for heating your home in an emergency.
