Statement as of 7:34 AM EST on November 12, 2009 ... Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM EST this evening... ... Coastal Flood Watch remains in effect from late tonight through Friday morning... A coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM EST this evening. A coastal Flood Watch remains in effect from late tonight through Friday morning. The combination of strong east to northeast winds and high astronomical tides are expected to cause tidal piling... while long period easterly swells will prevent drainage of waters from the bays. Minor coastal flood levels were reached this morning at a few locations across the back bays of the South Shore of NYC and Long Island. Tidal departures reached 1 to 1 1/2 ft... with upwards of 2 ft in a few locations. Strong easterly winds and long period swells will help maintain this residual water through today. Minor flooding is expected once again with the high tide cycle this afternoon and evening with tidal departures of 1 1/2 to 2 ft. Moderate coastal flooding is possible during the times of high tide Friday morning with positive tidal departures of 2 to 2 1/2 ft expected. In addition to coastal flooding... high and long period easterly swells will likely result in high surf and moderate beach erosion Thursday through Saturday. Precautionary/preparedness actions... A coastal Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore. A coastal Flood Watch means that conditions favorable for flooding are expected to develop. Coastal residents should be alert for later statements or warnings... and take action to protect property. ... Atlantic Ocean and South Shore bays Thursday afternoon... ... ... ... ... ...
