Coastal Hazard Statement
Statement as of 4:39 PM EDT on July 29, 2015

... High rip current risk in effect from Thursday morning through
Thursday evening...

The National Weather Service in Upton has issued a high rip
current risk... which is in effect from Thursday morning through
Thursday evening.

* Locations... ocean beaches of New York City and Long Island.

* Rip current risk... high

* surf height... 3 to 5 ft.

* Lightning risk... high

* timing... through the day and into the evening... with the
highest risk in the afternoon and early evening.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. Talk to lifeguards and beach officials to
learn about any surf hazards and heed their advice. Pay attention
to flags and posted signs and swim in life guarded areas.

If you become caught in a rip current... Yell for help. Remain
calm... do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. If you have to swim out of a rip current... swim parallel to
shore. Once you are away from the force of the rip current...
begin to swim back toward the beach. Do not attempt to swim
directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.

Air Quality Alert
Statement as of 12:18 AM EDT on July 29, 2015

... Air quality alert in effect from 11 am this morning to 11 PM EDT
this evening...

The New York state department of environmental conservation has
issued an air quality health advisory for the following counties...

Richmond... Kings... Queens... New York... Bronx... Westchester...
Rockland... Nassau... Suffolk... Orange... Putnam.

In effect from 11 am this morning to 11 PM EDT this evening.

Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than
an air quality index value of 100 for the pollutant of ground level
ozone. The air quality index... or aqi... was created as an easy way
to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher
the aqi value, the greater the health concern.

When pollution levels are elevated... the New York state department
of health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous
outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health
effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of
elevated levels of pollutants include the very Young, and those with
pre-existing respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease.
Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal
physician.

A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York
residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. The toll
free number is: 1 800 5 3 5, 1 3 4 5.
