The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a Freezing Rain Advisory... which is in effect from 7 PM this evening to 1 PM EST Saturday.
Precipitation will move into the Mohawk Valley... Tug Hill plateau and western Catskills this evening. Surface temperatures are expected to be below freezing by this time as cold air gets trapped near the surface. After midnight... freezing rain will increase in coverage and become widespread through the morning hours. Expect icing to occur across the area into Saturday afternoon... before temperatures warm enough to change the precipitation to plain rain.
Total ice accumulations of one tenth to one quarter of an inch will be possible across these areas. Higher elevations will be especially susceptible to icing from tonight through Saturday morning.
Travel across the area will become hazardous... especially Friday night as surface temperatures cool. Anyone traveling across the area should allow extra time to reach their destinations as roadways will become slippery and hazardous.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Freezing Rain Advisory means that periods of freezing rain or freezing drizzle will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving.
