The National Weather Service in Albany has issued a Freezing Rain Advisory... which is in effect from 7 PM this evening to 3 PM Saturday for the eastern Catskills... Mohawk Valley... upper Hudson Valley including the capital district and for the Berkshires.
Precipitation will overspread the area from west to east tonight. Surface temperatures are expected to fall below freezing by this time the precipitation arrives with warmer air working in aloft... thus freezing rain is expected. A changeover to plain rain is expected to occur early Saturday afternoon.
Total ice accumulations of one tenth to one quarter of an inch will be possible... with the higher accumulations expected west of the Hudson River.
A large and powerful low pressure system over the mid west will move little today and tonight. This storm will begin to weaken tonight and move eastward across the Great Lakes region over the weekend. In the meantime... a secondary area low pressure is expected to develop over the mid Atlantic region overnight... then head northeast Saturday.
Travel will become hazardous. Anyone traveling across the area should allow extra time to reach their destinations as roadways will become slippery.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Freezing Rain Advisory means that periods of freezing rain or freezing drizzle will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving.
