Watches & Warnings

Lake Effect Snow Warning, Lake Effect Snow Watch
Issued: 4:00 AM EST Feb. 11, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Lake effect snow warning remains in effect until 4 PM EST this
afternoon...
... Lake effect snow watch remains in effect from late tonight
through Friday evening...

* locations... Chautauqua... Cattaraugus and southern Erie
counties... with the greatest snow amounts expected just inland
from Lake Erie across the Boston Hills and ski country through
Thursday. Late Thursday night and Friday a narrow band of
steadier snow will develop and may bring locally heavy snow
between Dunkirk and Buffalo and eastward into the Boston Hills
and Chautauqua ridge.

* Timing... the lake effect snow warning is in effect through
late this afternoon. The lake effect snow watch is in effect
from overnight tonight through early Friday evening.

* Accumulations... 6 to 10 inches in the most persistent snows
today... mainly across Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties. This
may be followed by an additional 1 to 3 inches of accumulation
tonight... and 4 to 8 inches Friday and Friday evening.

* Winds... west 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

* Visibilities... as low as a quarter mile at times.

* Impacts... lake effect snow and blowing snow will result in
difficult travel at times with snow covered roads and greatly
reduced visibilities.

* Forecaster confidence... forecast confidence in the watch is
medium. There is still some uncertainty in the location and
intensity of the band that is expected to develop tonight and
Friday.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

In lake effect snow the weather can vary from locally heavy snow
in narrow bands to clear skies just a few miles away. If you will
be traveling across the region be prepared for rapid changes in
Road and visibility conditions.

If you lose power and plan on running a generator... make sure
that the generator is located outdoors and is properly
ventilated. Space heaters should also be properly ventilated and
used only if they are operating properly. Make sure snow does not
block exhausts and fresh air intakes for high efficiency furnaces
and water heaters.
