Watches & Warnings

Lake Effect Snow Warning, Wind Chill Warning
Issued: 10:19 AM EST Feb. 12, 2016 – National Weather Service

... Lake effect snow warning remains in effect from 5 PM this
afternoon to 7 am EST Saturday...
... Wind chill warning remains in effect from 5 am Saturday to
10 am EST Sunday...

* locations... Oswego County.

* Timing... the lake effect snow warning is in effect from late
this afternoon through early Saturday morning. The wind chill
warning is in effect from late tonight through late Sunday
morning.

* Accumulations... 5 to 9 inches tonight... and 1 to 3 inches
Saturday... leading to storm totals of 6 to 12 inches in the most
persistent lake snows.

* Winds... northwest 20 to 30 mph.

* Visibilities... as low as a quarter mile at times.

* Temperatures... around 20 today. Lows zero to 5 below tonight.
Highs 5 below to 5 above zero Saturday. Lows 10 below to 20
below zero Saturday night. Between 5 below and 20 below zero
Sunday.

* Wind chill values... as low as 40 below.

* Impacts... lake effect snow and blowing snow will result in
difficult travel at times late today through early Saturday
with snow covered roads and greatly reduced visibilities. In
addition... wind chills and temperatures will reach dangerously
cold levels. The frigid conditions could result in frozen
pipes... and will quickly lead to frostbite and hypothermia if
you are not properly dressed.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A wind chill warning is issued when a strong wind will combine
with cold temperatures to create dangerously cold conditions for
exposed skin. The wind will make it feel like it is 25 degrees
below zero or colder for several hours. Those planning to venture
outdoors should use common sense and dress warmly.

In lake effect snow the weather can vary from locally heavy snow
in narrow bands to clear skies just a few miles away. If you will
be traveling across the region be prepared for rapid changes in
Road and visibility conditions.

If you lose power and plan on running a generator... make sure
that the generator is located outdoors and is properly
ventilated. Space heaters should also be properly ventilated and
used only if they are operating properly. Make sure snow does not
block exhausts and fresh air intakes for high efficiency furnaces
and water heaters.
