... Severe weather awareness week begins today...
April 26 to may 2 is severe weather awareness week in New
York... Connecticut... Massachusetts and Vermont. All residents
are urged to be weather ready by protecting themselves from The
Hazards of flooding... tornadoes... and severe thunderstorms.
Nationally... on average... severe weather kills 268 people per
year... including 109 from tornadoes... 75 from flooding... 51 from
wind and 33 from lightning. Severe weather happens locally. The
National Weather Service forecast office in Albany New York
issues 131 severe thunderstorm warnings... 4 tornado
warnings... and 30 flash flood warnings per year.
Each day this week we will explore actions to take during severe
weather to reduce the risk of death... injury and property loss to
you and your loved ones.
Monday we review severe weather terms and defintions.
Tuesday the focus is on severe thunderstorms.
Wednesday we turn to severe weather preparedness and safety.
Thursday will feature a study of tornadoes with a review of
thunderstorm safety. On Thursday afternoon at 115 PM we will
conduct our severe weather communication drill. Thursday April 30
is also americas preparathon.
Friday is the day to look at the Summer flood threat and provide
some safety rules.
Finally on Saturday we will review the key items from this week
once again focusing on preparedness and safety.
Taking steps now to prepare for severe weather will help you keep
