This Labor Day weekend will be marked by drastically changing weather. Very warm temperatures Friday... about 5 to 10 degrees above normal... and light winds will give way to temperatures falling to 10 to 15 degrees below normal by Sunday afternoon and evening.
A strong cold front will sweep south through northern California and Nevada by Sunday afternoon. Ahead of this front gusty west to southwest winds are likely north of Highway 50 on Saturday. These gusty winds... in excess of 35 mph... will result in hazardous boating conditions on area lakes from the Tahoe basin north and on Pyramid Lake. Temperatures Saturday will climb into the 90s.
As the front sweeps south late Saturday night and early Sunday the strongest winds will shift to south of Highway 50 for Sunday. Temperatures north of the front will fall dramatically Sunday... with highs in many areas only reaching the lower to mid 70s. Some areas in the Sierra north of the Tahoe basin will struggle to climb out of the 60s for highs. Farther south temperatures will climb into the 80s... but gusty southwest to west winds in excess of 40 mph will develop. These winds will produce hazardous boating conditions from the Tahoe basin south through the Sierra and east to Walker Lake.
While the wind will subside Monday... temperatures will remain well below normal. Highs will average in the 70s for most areas with some Sierra locations once again struggling to rise out of the 60s.
