Localized light accumulations of snow will occur across Elko County...especially above 5500 feet...causing poor driving conditions on area roadways. Interstate 80 between Wells and Wendover...including Pequop Summit and Silver Zone Pass...and also Highway 93 between Wells and Jackpot are already experiencing snow covered Road conditions. Motorists should be prepared for slippery Road conditions and reduced visibilities if planning to travel on area roadways through tonight.

The National Weather Service in Elko has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for snow... which is in effect until 5 am PDT Sunday.
A low pressure system will develop over eastern Nevada and spread snow across southern Elko County today and tonight. The heaviest snowfall is expected across the eastern half of the County at elevations above 4500 feet. Above 7500 feet in the Ruby Mountains and East Humboldt Range... snow accumulations will range from 6 to 10 inches. Locations east of the Ruby Mountains between 4500 feet and 7500 feet are expected to recieve between 3 and 6 inches of snow accumulation by late tonight. Locations west of the Ruby Mountains... including the cities of Elko and Carlin... will miss the brunt of the storm... with 1 to 3 inches expected in these locations. Locations below 4500 feet... including the city of West Wendover... will also receive up to 3 inches of snow due to warmer temperatures at these lower elevations. The period of heaviest snow is expected to occur later this afternoon into this evening.
A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities... and use caution while driving.

An intense early-season winter storm will dominate the region this weekend. Snowfall amounts over eastern Nevada will generally be 1 to 3 inches in the valleys and 4 to 8 inches on the east side of the mountains of Elko County. Being early in the winter season... records for snowfall could be surpassed. Additionally... the extreme cold associated with this storm system will approach record lows in several locations through Monday morning.
