Tropical Weather: Subtropical Storm Beryl (North Atlantic) Post-Tropical Cyclone Bud (East Pacific) Tropical Storm Sanvu (Western Pacific)
Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Saturday, May 26, 2012. A busy day greeted parts of the country at the start of the Memorial Day weekend. First, Subtropical Storm Beryl formed off the Carolina Coast and was expected to move slowly west-southwestward toward the northeast coast of Florida. Beryl is anticipated to make landfall late Sunday evening or early Monday with tropical storm strength winds before lingering over the area through Tuesday. Northern Florida and adjacent areas of Georgia are currently suffering through an exceptional drought, so the significant rain from Beryl will help to alleviate some of the drought.

Meanwhile, an intense heat wave gripped the Southern Plains and Southeast on Saturday. This heat wave produced temperatures well into the 90s for a wide swath the country from eastern New Mexico through Georgia. Temperatures in the 90s were also observed well north into the Central Plains and Ohio Valley. Heat index values, which tell how warm the air feels, rose above 100 degrees along the Gulf Coast where the humidity was elevated. This heat wave was expected to continue and expand Sunday, with more areas warming above 100 degrees.

While no severe weather has formed by the early afternoon, there remains a slight risk of severe weather in the Plains into the evening. This severe weather can include strong thunderstorms, large hail, strong winds, and even tornadoes. Residents in the Plains should monitor local weather conditions.

The Southern Plains and Southeast rose into the 90s and 100s, while the Northeast saw temperatures in the 70s and 80s. The Southwest rose into the 80s and 90s, while the Northwest saw temperatures in the 70s.

The following message is transmitted at the request of the New Mexico
department of health and the New Mexico environment department.

The Whitewater Baldy fire complex is expected to produce an active
smoke plume over the next several days. Transport winds have
shifted and are now directed from southwest to northeast over the
region. This general direction of smoke transport will persist through
late Saturday before transport winds shift back to more of a west
to east orientation.

Areas of smoke anticipated across portions of western... central
and northern New Mexico will result in deteriorating air quality.
Areas immediately east and northeast of the fire complex will be
most significantly impacted... including but not limited to the
communities of Quemado... Quemado Lake... Magdalena... Alamo and the
Acoma Pueblo. Farther downstream... smoke impacts will expand to include
areas along the Rio Grande Valley from Socorro to Belen to Albuquerque
as well as Los Alamos... White Rock and the Santa Fe Metro area.

In addition to smoke impacts... areas of blowing dust are likely
across portions of area later today and especially on Saturday
further impacting visibility and air quality.

If heavy smoke is present... outdoor activities should be minimized.
Remember... your eyes are your best tools to determine if it is safe
to be outside. If visibility is ten miles or higher... the air
quality is good... six to nine miles... air quality is moderate... three
to five miles... air quality is unhealthy for sensitive people... one
and a half to two and a half miles... air quality is unhealthy...
one to one and a quarter miles... air quality is very unhealthy...
and three quarters of a mile or less... air quality is hazardous.
