Through 10 PM MST...rain and high elevation snow showers will continue to expand in areal coverage ahead of a cold front progressing east across western and central New Mexico...including the Rio Grande Valley between Socorro...Albuquerque...Santa Fe and Taos. Snow levels will continue to be high ahead of the front... around 8500 feet...but will drop to around 5500 feet behind the front. Rain amounts will generally be a tenth of an inch or less... with snow amounts of 1 to 2 inches possible...especially in the jemez and Tusas Mountains. In addition...windy conditions will persist with occasional gusts to between 35 and 40 mph. A rumble of thunder or two can not be ruled out.

Statement as of 3:38 PM MST on March 02, 2015

... Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 5 PM MST Tuesday...

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Winter
Weather Advisory for snow... which is in effect until 5 PM MST
Tuesday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in effect.

* Snow accumulations... expect 4 to 7 inches.

* Timing... snow will increase this evening and remain into the
early morning hours on Tuesday before becoming lighter the rest
of the period.

* Winds... southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph over
ridgetops and open terrain. Becoming westerly with lowering
speeds following the frontal passage. An initial intense band of
wind will be found along the frontal passage with gusts as high
as 55 mph possible early to mid evening.

* Snow levels... temperatures will be cold enough for snow at
locations near and above 8500 feet initially early this evening
then rapidly lower and be cold enough for all snow by late
evening.

* Local impacts... difficult travel conditions due to snow packed
and icy roadways are expected at times in the high country
along with reduced visibility in locally heavy snow and
blowing snow.

Motorists should be alert to changing weather conditions and take
precautions if travel is necessary.
