Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Tuesday, February 14, 2012. Valentine's Day will be greeted by a storm that will begin the day in the Mississippi Valley before moving eastward into the eastern third of the country. In the colder air to the north, snow is expected to fall through the Ohio Valley before moving into the Northeast in the evening. The warmer air to the north will only allow areas of light to moderate rain to form from Louisiana through the Carolinas. By the end of the day, much of the precipitation from this storm will be off the eastern seaboard, leaving warmer air in the Southern Plains and much colder air in the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest.

In the West, a storm will track through the Great Basin before slamming into the Rockies, where it will produce much needed high elevation snow. This will not be a tremendous snow producer, but several inches of the white stuff is expected.

Late in the day, a Pacific storm will make its approach to the West Coast. As the storm moves inland, it will instigate rain and high elevation snow in Washington and Oregon. This storm will be the next rain producer for California on Wednesday.

The Northeast will rise in to the 30s and 40s, while the Southeast will see temperatures in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. The Northern Plains will rise into the 30s and 40s, while the Northwest will see temperatures in the 30s and 40s.

Nowcast as of 10:20 am MST on February 14, 2012
Through sunset...rain and snow snow showers will slowly increase in coverage and...to some degree...intensity as the day progresses across north central...northwest and west central New Mexico. For the most part...the most persistent areas of precipitation will favor the west slopes of the chuska...jemez and southern San Juan Mountains...where visibilities may drop to near or even a little under 1 mile at times this afternoon. Above about 7500 or 8000 feet spotty 1 to very locally 2 inch snow accumulations are possible through the noon hour across the north central...northwest and west central mountains...but down lower due to above freezing temperatures very little or no accumulation is expected. There is also some potential for isolated thunderstorms starting early to mid afternoon. Gusty winds will accompany the more significant showers and any storms that may develop.
Winter Storm Warning in effect until 8 am MST Wednesday...

Winter Storm Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 4:47 AM MST on February 14, 2012

... Winter Storm Warning in effect until 8 am MST Wednesday...

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Winter
Storm Warning for snow and blowing snow... which is in effect
until 8 am MST Wednesday. The Winter Storm Watch is no longer in
effect.

* Snow accumulations... three to six inches will be possible at
elevations below 7500 feet with upwards of 6 to 10 inches
expected above 7500 feet. Locally higher amounts will be
possible on some west facing slopes and higher peaks above 10000
feet.

* Timing... snowfall will increase late this morning and become
heavy at times through the afternoon and evening. Snow will
rapidly decrease in coverage and intensity Wednesday morning.

* Winds... periods of sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph with
occasional gusts to 40 mph can be expected in some higher
terrain areas... especially along and south of Interstate 40.
This will produce areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility.

* Snow levels... snow levels will likely rise to near 7500 feet by
early to mid afternoon... but will rapidly fall as precipitation
increases and cooler air works in.

* Local impacts... the potential exists for hazardous travel
especially near the Continental Divide between Gallup and
Grants... along portions of Highway 550 near Cuba... and roadways
near Chama and Jemez Springs.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow and blowing snow means
severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring.
Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel
dangerous. Strong winds are likely. Only travel in an emergency.
If you must travel... keep an extra flashlight... food... and water
in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
