Showers and thunderstorms will move into the Plains, while also continuing across the East Coast on Friday. A low pressure system over the Rocky Mountains will persist on its eastward track and move into the Plains. Flow around this system will create northward flow, pulling abundant moisture and energy in from the Gulf of Mexico. This will allow for scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop across the Southern Plains again on Friday, spreading northward through the Central and Northern Plains. There is a slight chance that these storms will turn severe across northeastern Colorado, into western Kansas and Nebraska. Large hail and strong winds are likely in these areas, with possibly a tornado or two.

Meanwhile in the East, a trough of low pressure and associated cold front will slowly move eastward and offshore the East Coast on Friday. This system will allow for showers and thunderstorms to persist from the Mid-Atlantic states through Maine. Severe thunderstorms are not likely in these areas, but periods of heavy rainfall and strong winds will persist as this system lingers over the Northeast through Friday night.

Out West, an area of low pressure continues spinning over the Pacific Northwest, maintaining onshore flow. This will bring more rain showers to Oregon and Washington, with snow showers possible at highest elevations.

Nowcast as of 2:06 PM MDT on May 24, 2013
Thunderstorms and showers will continue to develop mainly along the east slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains this afternoon. Once developed...movement will be to the northeast around 30 mph. Through 3 PM MDT...locations just east of Red River...Angel Fire and Black Lake then east to Cimarron and Raton will be impacted by these storms. The strongest thunderstorms will produce brief moderate to heavy rain...dangerous cloud to ground lightning...gusty surface winds and dime to penny sized hail. Showers will most likely produce a few hundreths to possibly one tenth of an inch of rain.
