Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 5:44 AM MST on February 09, 2010
... Potential winter storm across portions of southern New Mexico
Wednesday afternoon through Thursday...
Another potent low pressure system currently gathering strength off
the California coast... will dive southeastward into far southern
Arizona and northwest Mexico late tonight into Wednesday morning.
The low will then make its way eastward along or just south of the
international Borderland region Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday
night.
The eventual speed and track of the upper level storm system will
determine where and how much wintry precipitation falls across
southern areas... and how much cold air will be available for
significant snows across the higher terrain of southwest and south-
central New Mexico. Present indications are that accumulating snows
will develop across parts of west-central and southwest New Mexico as
early as Wednesday afternoon... with mountain snow and mixed rain and
snow at the lower elevations spreading eastward Wednesday night into
Thursday morning. There is the potential for significant
accumulations in the upper Gila region as well as the Guadalupe...
northern Sacramento and Capitan Mountains and adjacent High Plains.
A mix of rain... sleet and snow will also be possible across the
southeast plains as early as Wednesday afternoon... and could last
through Thursday.
Residents of southern New Mexico are urged to keep abreast of the
latest forecasts and weather conditions... but should be prepared for
cold temperatures through Thursday and the possibility of wintry
precipitation. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio... the National
Weather Service website... or your preferred media outlet for the
latest forecasts and statements concerning this potential winter
storm.
