Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Tuesday, February 14, 2012. Valentine's Day will be greeted by a storm that will begin the day in the Mississippi Valley before moving eastward into the eastern third of the country. In the colder air to the north, snow is expected to fall through the Ohio Valley before moving into the Northeast in the evening. The warmer air to the north will only allow areas of light to moderate rain to form from Louisiana through the Carolinas. By the end of the day, much of the precipitation from this storm will be off the eastern seaboard, leaving warmer air in the Southern Plains and much colder air in the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest.

In the West, a storm will track through the Great Basin before slamming into the Rockies, where it will produce much needed high elevation snow. This will not be a tremendous snow producer, but several inches of the white stuff is expected.

Late in the day, a Pacific storm will make its approach to the West Coast. As the storm moves inland, it will instigate rain and high elevation snow in Washington and Oregon. This storm will be the next rain producer for California on Wednesday.

The Northeast will rise in to the 30s and 40s, while the Southeast will see temperatures in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. The Northern Plains will rise into the 30s and 40s, while the Northwest will see temperatures in the 30s and 40s.

Winter Weather Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 4:47 AM MST on February 14, 2012

... Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 8 am MST Wednesday...

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Winter
Weather Advisory for snow and blowing snow... which is in effect until
8 am MST Wednesday.

* Snow accumulations... generally one to three inches can be
expected below 7500 feet and upwards of three to six inches
above 7500 feet.

* Timing... snowfall will increase late this morning and become
heavy at times through the afternoon and evening. Snow will
rapidly decrease in coverage and intensity Wednesday morning.

* Winds... periods of sustained winds of 20 to 35 mph with
occasional gusts to 45 mph can be expected in some higher
terrain areas... especially along and south of Interstate 40.
This will produce areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility.

* Snow levels... snow levels will likely rise to near 7500 feet by
early to mid afternoon... but will rapidly fall as precipitation
increases and cooler air works in.

* Local impacts... the potential exists for hazardous travel...
especially near the Continental Divide between Gallup and Grants
and through Narbona Pass in the Chuska Mountains. Travel along
portions of U.S. Highways 60... 64... 491... and 550 will also be
impacted.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...
a Winter Weather Advisory for snow and blowing snow means that
visibilities will be restricted due to a combination of falling
and blowing snow.
