Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Cold air poured into the Plains on Saturday, while snow showers developed in parts of the Northeast. A strong low pressure system that brought heavy rain to the Southern Plains and Southeast has advanced eastward and off the East Coast into the Atlantic Ocean. However, counter-clockwise flow around this system continued to push moisture into the Northeast, Great Lakes, and Ohio River Valley. In addition to cool air over the region, this allowed for snow showers to develop across Michigan and the Ohio River Valley. Snowfall accumulations ranged from 1 to 3 inches in most areas, with up to 5 inches at higher elevations of the Central Appalachians. Coastal regions remained slightly warmer, which maintained light rain showers from southern Maine through Virginia.

Behind this system, a dominant ridge of high pressure continued to build over the Plains. This system started to stretch eastward over the Mississippi Valley. Flow around this system pulled cold air in from central Canada and kept seasonable cool temperatures over the Central US. High temperatures only reached into the 30s in parts of northern Texas, while the Central and Northern Plains saw highs in the teens, with overnight lows in the negative teens.

Out West, cool conditions persisted with areas of wet weather as a trough of low pressure moved over the Pacific Northwest and into the Intermountain West and Great Basin. Rainfall totals and high elevation snow accumulation remained light. A few light rain showers extended into California as moist onshore flow persisted.

Nowcast as of 5:53 PM MST on February 11, 2012
Widespread low clouds and areas of freezing fog will continue through the evening from the east slopes of the Central Mountain chain to the Texas border. The fog and low clouds will be the most dense from the Ruidoso area north through Clines Corners...Las Vegas and Raton. Visibilities across this region before 9 PM will range from one quarter to one half mile to around 2 miles. The fog could also result in areas of black ice on highways...including Interstate 40 and Interstate 25. Bridges and overpasses could also be slick with black ice. Very light snow may also accompany the low clouds and fog. Driving will be dangerous due to sudden changes in visibility and icy roads. Motorists should allow plenty of time to reach their destinations during the evening across central and eastern New Mexico.

effect from 5 am to 11 PM MST Sunday.

* Snow accumulations... 1 to 3 inches of snow and sleet favoring
Curry... Roosevelt and eastern Chaves counties.

* Timing... a wintry mix of precipitation will begin Sunday morning
and continue through Sunday evening then taper off before
midnight Sunday night.

* Winds... south winds 10-20 mph Sunday and 5 to 15 mph Sunday
night.

* Snow levels... temperatures will be cold enough for freezing and
frozen precipitation at all locations.

* Local impacts... the heaviest precipitation will likely impact
U.S. 380 east of Roswell and U.S. Route 70 from Elkins to Elida
to Portales and Clovis on south.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow... sleet... or
freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for
hazardous Road conditions and reduced visibilities.

Special Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:23 PM MST on February 11, 2012

... Areas of dense freezing fog eastern plains tonight...

Expect locally poor visibilities in freezing fog to persist
across portions of eastern New Mexico tonight... with
visibilities near zero at times.

Freezing fog in contact with roads will produce dangerously slick
and icy spots in black ice conditions... especially on bridges and
other elevated surfaces. Of particular concern will be Interstate 40
from Clines Corners to the Texas line... and along highways 285...
60... 54 and 84... and Highway 70 in Roosevelt County.

In addition to the dense freezing fog... occasional flurries will be
encountered as temperatures hold nearly steady in the teens and 20s.
