Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Sunday, February 12, 2012.

The East dries out on Sunday, but wet weather continues moving through the West. A trough of low pressure advances eastward over the Great Basin and Central Rockies, producing moderate snow showers over Utah and Colorado. Winter weather advisories have been issued for parts of western Colorado as snowfall accumulations may reach from 6 to 8 inches by Sunday evening. Most of Utah, western Wyoming, and northern New Mexico should see lighter snow showers with accumulation around 1 to 2 inches. The tail end of this trough will extend into western Texas, bringing snow and freezing rain showers into northwestern Texas. Precipitation from this system will move into the Texas Panhandle late Sunday into Monday morning. Winter storm warnings have been issued for the region as 3 to 5 inches of snow are possible, with ice accumulations from 0.10 to 0.30 inches by Sunday evening. This will cause dangerous roads and travel conditions.

Meanwhile, another trough of low pressure and associated cold front approach the West Coast on Sunday. This system will reach the coasts of the Pacific Northwest and northern California in the afternoon and evening hours, bringing more rain showers. Temperatures will remain cool over most of the West Coast as this system pushes clouds and moisture onshore.

In the East, a strong ridge of high pressure allows for dry, sunny, and cool weather to persist. This system creates strong flow from the north, pushing cold air into the Plains and Eastern Valleys. Expect highs to range in the 20s in the Midwest, while the Ohio River Valley and Tennessee Valleys will see highs in the 30s. Freeze advisories have been issued for the Gulf states as low temperatures will drop into the 20s Sunday night. Dangerous fire conditions spread over the Southeastern states due to high pressure creating a very dry airmas with strong winds.

Nowcast as of 11:46 PM MST on February 11, 2012
Areas of low clouds and localized freezing fog will persist into the overnight hours from the east slopes of the Central Mountain chain to the Texas border. The patchy fog will be the most likely from the Ruidoso area north through Clines Corners...Las Vegas...Raton and east to Clayton. Visibilities will be reduced to 3 to 5 miles...with some isolated one quarter to one half mile visibilities. Fog and low clouds could deposit black ice on highways...including Interstate 40 and Interstate 25. Bridges and overpasses could also be slick with black ice. Light snow may also accompany the low clouds and fog. Driving will be dangerous due to sudden changes in visibility and the patchy nature of black ice. In addition...wind chill values will be in the single digits along the east slopes of the Central Mountain chain. Motorists should allow plenty of time to reach their destinations tonight across central and eastern New Mexico.

... Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 5 am to 11 PM
MST Sunday...

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow... sleet... and freezing rain
remains in effect from 5 am to 11 PM MST Sunday.

* Snow accumulations... 1 to 3 inches of snow and sleet with a
light layer of freezing rain.

* Timing... a wintry mix of precipitation will begin Sunday
morning and continue through Sunday evening then taper off
before midnight Sunday night.

* Winds... no widespread significant winds are expected.

* Snow levels... temperatures will be cold enough for a wintry mix
of precipitation at all locations.

* Local impacts... the heaviest precipitation will likely impact
U.S. 380 east of Roswell and U.S. Route 70 from Elkins to
Elida to Portales and Clovis on south.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow... sleet... or
freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for
hazardous Road conditions and reduced visibilities.

Special Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 3:23 PM MST on February 11, 2012

... Areas of dense freezing fog eastern plains tonight...

Expect locally poor visibilities in freezing fog to persist
across portions of eastern New Mexico tonight... with
visibilities near zero at times.

Freezing fog in contact with roads will produce dangerously slick
and icy spots in black ice conditions... especially on bridges and
other elevated surfaces. Of particular concern will be Interstate 40
from Clines Corners to the Texas line... and along highways 285...
60... 54 and 84... and Highway 70 in Roosevelt County.

In addition to the dense freezing fog... occasional flurries will be
encountered as temperatures hold nearly steady in the teens and 20s.
