Tropical Weather: Subtropical Storm Beryl (North Atlantic) Post-Tropical Cyclone Bud (East Pacific) Tropical Storm Sanvu (Western Pacific)
Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Saturday, May 26, 2012. A busy day greeted parts of the country at the start of the Memorial Day weekend. First, Subtropical Storm Beryl formed off the Carolina Coast and was expected to move slowly west-southwestward toward the northeast coast of Florida. Beryl is anticipated to make landfall late Sunday evening or early Monday with tropical storm strength winds before lingering over the area through Tuesday. Northern Florida and adjacent areas of Georgia are currently suffering through an exceptional drought, so the significant rain from Beryl will help to alleviate some of the drought.

Meanwhile, an intense heat wave gripped the Southern Plains and Southeast on Saturday. This heat wave produced temperatures well into the 90s for a wide swath the country from eastern New Mexico through Georgia. Temperatures in the 90s were also observed well north into the Central Plains and Ohio Valley. Heat index values, which tell how warm the air feels, rose above 100 degrees along the Gulf Coast where the humidity was elevated. This heat wave was expected to continue and expand Sunday, with more areas warming above 100 degrees.

While no severe weather has formed by the early afternoon, there remains a slight risk of severe weather in the Plains into the evening. This severe weather can include strong thunderstorms, large hail, strong winds, and even tornadoes. Residents in the Plains should monitor local weather conditions.

The Southern Plains and Southeast rose into the 90s and 100s, while the Northeast saw temperatures in the 70s and 80s. The Southwest rose into the 80s and 90s, while the Northwest saw temperatures in the 70s.

High Wind Warning
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 6:57 PM MDT on May 26, 2012

... High Wind Warning remains in effect until 6 am MDT Sunday...

* location... the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and adjacent
Highlands as well as the upper Rio Grande Valley... and much of
the Central Mountain chain and adjacent central and northeast
Highlands.

* Winds... southwest 35 to 45 with gusts up to 60 mph.

* Timing... widespread strong winds will peak through this evening
then locally strong winds will continue overnight over the higher
terrain as well as along and east of the Sandia/Manzano and
Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

* Visibility... occasionally reduced to between 2 and 5 miles in
dust prone areas... near open fields... and construction sites.

* Local impacts... strong Crosswinds can be expected especially
on north to south oriented roads. Trash cans... lawn furniture
and other lightweight or outdoor items may become airborne.
The magnitude of the high winds on Saturday may result in
downed trees and power lines... and potential property damage.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Motorists should exercise caution while traveling. Sudden gusts
of wind may cause you to lose control of your vehicle. Extra
attention should be given to cross winds.

Remember... a High Wind Warning means damaging winds are imminent
or highly likely. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or
gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.

Air Quality Alert
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 7:08 AM MDT on May 26, 2012

The following message is transmitted at the request of the New Mexico
department of health and the New Mexico environment department.

The Whitewater Baldy fire complex is expected to produce an active
smoke plume today. Transport winds oriented from southwest to
northeast will continue to carry smoke toward the northeast... but
the plume will be shifted slightly farther west than was the case
on Saturday.

Air quality will remain extremely variable across portions of
western... central and northern New Mexico. Areas immediately
northeast of the fire complex will be most significantly
impacted... including but not limited to the communities of
Quemado... Quemado Lake... Magdalena... Alamo... Acoma Pueblo...
Grants... and Cuba. Farther east... impacts will not be as
significant as Saturday but they are expected to increase during
the evening and into early Sunday as transport winds become more
westerly.

In addition to smoke impacts... areas of blowing dust will develop
across portions of area this afternoon and evening further impacting
visibility and air quality.

Remember... your eyes are your best tools to determine if it is
safe to be outdoors. If heavy smoke is present... outdoor
activities should be minimized. Remember... your eyes are your best

The following message is transmitted at the request of the New Mexico
department of health and the New Mexico environment department.

The Whitewater Baldy fire complex is expected to produce an active
smoke plume over the next several days. Transport winds have
shifted and are now directed from southwest to northeast over the
region. This general direction of smoke transport will persist through
late Saturday before transport winds shift back to more of a west
to east orientation.

Areas of smoke anticipated across portions of western... central
and northern New Mexico will result in deteriorating air quality.
Areas immediately east and northeast of the fire complex will be
most significantly impacted... including but not limited to the
communities of Quemado... Quemado Lake... Magdalena... Alamo and the
Acoma Pueblo. Farther downstream... smoke impacts will expand to include
areas along the Rio Grande Valley from Socorro to Belen to Albuquerque
as well as Los Alamos... White Rock and the Santa Fe Metro area.

In addition to smoke impacts... areas of blowing dust are likely
across portions of area later today and especially on Saturday
further impacting visibility and air quality.

If heavy smoke is present... outdoor activities should be minimized.
Remember... your eyes are your best tools to determine if it is safe
to be outside. If visibility is ten miles or higher... the air
quality is good... six to nine miles... air quality is moderate... three
to five miles... air quality is unhealthy for sensitive people... one
and a half to two and a half miles... air quality is unhealthy...
one to one and a quarter miles... air quality is very unhealthy...
and three quarters of a mile or less... air quality is hazardous.
