... Wintry weather expected to spread eastward across New Mexico
Tuesday through Wednesday...

A strong upper level low pressure system is currently making
landfall over the Pacific northwest... and is expected to dive
southward into Nevada tonight before the storm tracks over New
Mexico by Wednesday. Ample moisture and lift ahead of the storm
will allow rain and snow to commence over the northwestern third of
the state on Tuesday... and snow is expected to spread into many
central and eastern sections of the state through Wednesday. A Winter
Storm Watch is already in effect for much of the higher terrain of
northwestern New Mexico... and wintry conditions could potentially
spread into adjacent areas.

Although confidence is increasing regarding the path of this storm
system... the location and amounts of the heaviest snowfall are still
somewhat uncertain. Much of northern and central New Mexico will
likely see some snow... and significant accumulations will favor the
northern and central mountains and Highlands. Lesser amounts are
expected in the valleys and plains of central and eastern New Mexico.

In addition to the precipitation... a strong cold front will race
across the state through the day on Wednesday. Brisk north and
northwest winds will develop along and immediately behind the
front with well below normal temperatures prevailing through the end
of the week.
