Flash Flood Watch
Statement as of 11:58 AM MDT on May 04, 2015

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect from 3 PM MDT this afternoon
through Tuesday afternoon...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* a portion of north and central New Mexico... including the
following areas... Chaves County plains... Curry County... De Baca
County and Roosevelt County.

* From 3 PM MDT this afternoon through Tuesday afternoon

* an upper level low pressure system will approach slowly from
Southern California and Arizona today and pass over New Mexico on
Tuesday. At the same time... moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will
move into the eastern plains... setting the stage for
thunderstorms capable of excessive rainfall. The atmosphere will
destabilize today and continue to be unstable through late
Tuesday... allowing for multiple rounds of thunderstorms. The main
focus area will be over portions of the east central and
southeast plains... south of Interstate 40... where rainfall
amounts around two inches will be common. However... localized
areas may see storm total rainfall amounts near four inches
between Monday afternoon and Tuesday afternoon.

* Locations most vulnerable to flash flooding will include poor
drainage areas... areas around The Caprock Escarpment and the
cities of Roswell... Fort Sumner... Portales and Clovis.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to
flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
Monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash
flood warnings be issued.
