Weather Summary
Weather Underground midday recap for Saturday, February 11, 2012.

Cold air poured into the Plains on Saturday, while snow showers developed in parts of the Northeast. A strong low pressure system that brought heavy rain to the Southern Plains and Southeast has advanced eastward and off the East Coast into the Atlantic Ocean. However, counter-clockwise flow around this system continued to push moisture into the Northeast, Great Lakes, and Ohio River Valley. In addition to cool air over the region, this allowed for snow showers to develop across Michigan and the Ohio River Valley. Snowfall accumulations ranged from 1 to 3 inches in most areas, with up to 5 inches at higher elevations of the Central Appalachians. Coastal regions remained slightly warmer, which maintained light rain showers from southern Maine through Virginia.

Behind this system, a dominant ridge of high pressure continued to build over the Plains. This system started to stretch eastward over the Mississippi Valley. Flow around this system pulled cold air in from central Canada and kept seasonable cool temperatures over the Central US. High temperatures only reached into the 30s in parts of northern Texas, while the Central and Northern Plains saw highs in the teens, with overnight lows in the negative teens.

Out West, cool conditions persisted with areas of wet weather as a trough of low pressure moved over the Pacific Northwest and into the Intermountain West and Great Basin. Rainfall totals and high elevation snow accumulation remained light. A few light rain showers extended into California as moist onshore flow persisted.

Winter Weather Advisory
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 2:42 PM MST on February 11, 2012

... Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 5 am to 8 PM MST
Sunday...

The National Weather Service in El Paso TX/Santa Teresa has
issued a Winter Weather Advisory for sleet and freezing rain... which
is in effect from 5 am to 8 PM MST Sunday.

* Event: southeastern portions of Otero County and all of Hudspeth
County are in the main zone for freezing rain... sleet and snow.
Northern portions of the Tularosa basin... including Alamogordo
and Tularosa are not expected to be as seriously impacted by
this winter weather event.

* Timing: freezing rain and sleet may start to begin around 5 am
Sunday morning and will continue through 8pm... when showers are
expected to taper off and end. Portions of the area may see
freezing precipitation change more over to rain as warmer air
moves into the area from the west.

* Impact: freezing rain and sleet will make roads slippery and
hazardous... especially during the morning hours.

* Winds: windy conditions of 20 to 30 mph from the east will occur
tonight and continue into the morning. Winds will shift around
to the south and southwest in the afternoon.

* Snow levels:a mixture of snow... freezing rain and sleet will be
possible at all levels in the morning. Some of the precipitation
may change to more rain in the afternoon if warmer air works
into the area. Freezing conditions may linger into the early
evening for eastern portions of Otero and Hudspeth counties.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow... sleet... or
freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for
slippery roads and limited visibilities... and use caution while
driving.

Special Weather Statement
Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 4:38 PM MST on February 11, 2012

A cold front will push further west into southwest New Mexico
tonight. Strong easterly winds behind the front will result in
locally windy conditions... especially along west slopes of local
area mountains. Wind gusts up to 50 mph may occur through tonight.
Winds will diminish somewhat by tomorrow morning as precipitation
chances begin to increase.
