Coastal Flood Watch
Statement as of 3:26 PM EST on November 10, 2009
... Coastal Flood Watch in effect from Wednesday evening through
late Thursday night...
The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a coastal
Flood Watch... which is in effect from Wednesday evening through
late Thursday night.
A persistent and strong onshore flow is about to develop along
coastal areas and continue through at least Thursday night and
Friday. The onshore flow will be caused by the combination of a
strong high pressure system that will move across New England and
a low pressure system that will drift off the North Carolina
coast.
Some minor tidal flooding is possible with the afternoon high
tide on Wednesday, but the threat for moderate tidal flooding
will rise as the onshore flow increases and persists for
subsequent high tides. This will be especially true for back bays
and inlets which will have an increasing difficult time of
draining between the high tide cycles. In all likelihood it will
be raining and this will compound any tidal flooding problems.
Beach erosion once again is likely as this will be a multi tidal
event.
High tides along the ocean front will occur between 3 am and 430 am
early Thursday morning, between 330 PM and 5 PM Thursday
afternoon and between 4 am and 530 am early Friday morning. High
tides along adjacent back bays and inlets as well as into Delaware
Bay do occur up to a few hours later.
Predicted high tides for this watch from the early Thursday
morning through the early Friday morning high tide cycle are
around 7.0 feet above MLLW at Atlantic City, Rehoboth and
Breakwater Harbor, 7.5 to 8.0 feet above MLLW at Cape May and
8.0 to 8.5 feet at Reedy Point. Depending on how quickly the low
and high pressure systems both move offshore, tidal flooding
potential might persist with later high tide cycles Friday.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A coastal Flood Watch means that conditions favorable for
flooding might develop. Coastal residents should be alert for
later statements, advisories or warnings... and take action to protect
property. Please make plans to park cars in areas that are not
vulnerable to tidal flooding and to take roadways that are not
prone to tidal flooding.
