Weather Summary
Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, May 19, 2012.

Active weather continues moving through the Central US on Saturday as a low pressure system moves off the Rockies and into the Plains. This system will pull moisture in from the Gulf of Mexico and produces scattered showers and thunderstorms across the Northern and Central Plains, moving into the Upper Midwest. Some of these storms may turn severe with strong winds, large hail, and possibly a few tornadoes. Rainfall totals will reach over 2 inches in areas of severe weather development.

In the East, expect high pressure to remain the dominant weather feature, allowing for dry and warm conditions to continue. Expect sunny skies with highs in the 80s from the Northeast, through the Eastern Valleys, and into the Mid-Atlantic states. However, further south, a few scattered showers and thunderstorms may continue over parts of Florida as a frontal boundary lingers over the region. These storms are not expected to turn severe.

In the West, high pressure keeps the Southwestern US hot, dry, and breezy on Saturday. This will maintain high fire danger throughout Arizona, New Mexico, and into western Texas. The rest of the Western US will see a warming trend as high pressure builds in from the west and allows for sunny and pleasant conditions.

Mobile & Email Alerts Statement as of 9:15 am EDT on May 19, 2012

... Please join the National Weather Service in observing National safe boating week... may 19th through may 25th...

Even though Maine and New Hampshire set record high temperatures in the 80s for several days in marchthe weather has remained chilly for much of the month of may. In responseboaters need to be aware that water temperatures have only been in the upper 40s to lower 50s. That's why the National safe boating Council wants to remind people of the dangers of cold water boating.

Cold water is defined as any water with a temperature of 70 degrees fahrenheit or lower. Boaters should always be aware of the dangers of cold water... particularly during the early part of the boating season when the water is colder and where there are not many other boaters around to help.

The first hazards of cold water are panic and shock. The initial shock can severely strain the body and may cause instant cardiac arrest. Survivors of cold water accidents often describe having their breath "knocked out" of them upon their first impact with the water. Disorientation may also occur after cold water immersion.

The most recent boating statitistics issued by the United States department of Homeland security and the Coast Guard indicate that water temperatures
resulted in 186 deaths with water temperatures below 60 degrees. In Maine... there were a total of 44 accidents and eight fatalities during the year. Several of these accidents occurred on warm... sunny days... but with very cold water temperatures on the lakes... rivers and the ocean during the Spring.

So please allow for extra caution if boating early in the season. Be on alert for gusty winds or choppy seas that can easily capsize a small craft.
