Public Information Statement
Statement as of 9:44 am CST on December 25, 2009
... The Christmas blizzard continues...
The powerful winter storm system centered over Iowa is affecting the weather from the Canadian border south to the Gulf of Mexico. Over western and north central Nebraska snow fall has been spreading from the east to the west and south over the nighttime hours with some areas of the northeast seeing moderate to occasionally heavy snow fall along with very strong northwest winds. Gusts of nearly 50 mph have been seen at Valentine... with gusts over 40 mph at Ainsworth and Oneill as well as Broken Bow and Thedford. The strong winds and snow will continue into the evening hours and most likely the overnight hours across the region. Blowing and drifting snow will create hazardous traveling conditions... with reduced visibilities and snow drifts across some roadways. Extreme caution should be exercised if venturing out today. In addition to the snow and wind... windchills well below zero will also be a hazard to contend with.
