... Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from midnight tonight to midnight CST Wednesday night... ... Blizzard watch remains in effect from late Wednesday night through Friday morning...
A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from midnight tonight to midnight CST Wednesday night. A blizzard watch remains in effect from late Wednesday night through Friday morning.
* This winter storm will impact the area beginning late tonight and last through midday Christmas day.
* A mixture of sleet and snow... and possibly some freezing rain... will overspread the area by late Wednesday morning. The precipitation will be all snow by afternoon... and be heavy at times through Wednesday evening. Additional accumulating snow... will continue on Christmas eve... and possibly into Christmas day.
* Snowfall amounts of 9 to 14 inches are expected... with the heaviest amounts likely along and north of Highway 30. Several locations could pick up one foot of snow Christmas.
* By dawn Thursday... north to northwest winds will have increased to speeds of 30 to 45 mph. Gusts over 50 mph are likely. Those high winds will last through at Christmas day. Blizzard conditions are expected Christmas eve and at least the first half of Christmas day. Visibility in open country will be near zero.
* Impacts from this storm will be far reaching... and last through at least Christmas day. White out conditions will make travel dangerous to impossible. It is unlikely Road crews will be able to keep up with the blowing and drifting snow once the strongest winds kick in. Do not plan any unnecessary travel during the storm. If you have not done so already... change your travel plans now to have a safe Holiday.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow... sleet... and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.
A blizzard watch means there is a potential for falling and/or blowing snow with strong winds and extremely poor visibilities. This can lead to whiteout conditions and make travel very dangerous.
